ISHS Acta Horticulturae 738: International Symposium on Biotechnology of Temperate Fruit Crops and Tropical Species

IS IT POSSIBLE TO INDUCE COLD TOLERANCE IN PAPAYA THROUGH GENETIC TRANSFORMATION?

Authors:   S.A. Dhekney, R.E. Litz, D. Moraga, A. Yadav
Keywords:   Carica papaya, Vasconcella, cold tolerance, CBF
Abstract:
Carica papaya has no tolerance of cold, and brief exposure to temperatures at or below 0°C will kill the plant, although the related Vasconcella species have some degree of cold tolerance. Genomes of Carica papaya and Vasconcella were probed for the presence of cold-inducible sequences similar to those that occur in Arabidopsis using PCR. Cold-inducible sequences were observed only in Vasconcella. The C repeat binding factor (CBF) gene family induces the cold acclimation pathway in Arabidopsis. Transformation of papaya with CBF genes may not be a viable strategy for inducing cold tolerance in this species.
