Abstract:
Guava is the third important fruit crop next to mango and banana in Tamil Nadu and is cultivated in about 9,700 ha with an annual production of 61,500 MT with a productivity of 4.56 t ha-1. This is far below the national average productivity of 11.3 t ha-1. Improvement in the productivity of guava assumes greater importance in view of the large area it occupies and its productivity potential (20 t ha-1). Low productivity recorded in Tamil Nadu is due to cultivation of seedling origin and limited varieties like Lucknow-49 and Allahabad Safeda.
Majority of the orchards are having the problem of drought stress, poor canopy management, poor orchard and nutrient management, physiological disorders viz., boron deficiency, zinc deficiency and bronzing, disease like wilt, canker, and insect pests like fruit fly, tea mosquito bug etc.
For increasing the productivity in existing orchards of Tamil Nadu it is required to adopt proper canopy and ground management practices, adequate nutrient application, good irrigation management, use of suitable rootstocks and controlling physiological disorders, such as ‘corky fruits’ by maintaining the micronutrient status and effective and timely control of pest and diseases through eco-friendly approaches.
