Abstract:
The effect of different plant densities, viz. 278 (6.0 × 6.0 m), 625 (4.0 × 4.0 m), 1111 (3.0 × 3.0 m) and 1600 (2.5 × 2.5 m) plants per hectare in guava ‘L-49’ revealed that the increase in plant density markedly increase of the plant height while the basal girth of the plant and spread of the crown decreased.
High density planting delayed the emergence of flowering, shortened the flowering period and reduced the fruit set.
An increase in plant density from 278 to 1600 ha-1 was found to decrease the yield from 36.8 kg to 27.9 kg plant-1, reduced the fruit weight from 135.4 g to 125.7 g but increased the yield per hectare area from 102.4 q to 446.5 q ha-1. Close planting decreased the TSS and acid ratio of fruit.
