IMPACT OF TREE AGE AND CANOPY POSITION ON FRUIT QUALITY OF GUAVA

Authors:   R. Asrey, R.K. Pal, V.R. Sagar, V.B. Patel
Keywords:   plant age, canopy positions, fruit quality, guava
Abstract:
Guava cultivar Allahabad Safed was grown under experimental block at the orchard of Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi. Fruits were harvested from those plants when they reached a light green stage. The quality of fruits obtained from upper, middle and lower canopies of 10, 15 and 20 years old trees was studied by determining physico-chemical properties and mineral composition of the fruits. TSS and total sugars content was found elevated in upper canopy fruits of all the age group trees. Fruits from upper canopy of 15-year-old trees had higher TSS (11.85%), total sugars (7.50%) and lowest acidity (0.28%). Vitamin C content was higher in fruits obtained from middle and lower canopies and recorded higher average (231.05) in middle age group plants. Per cent seed content (weight basis) of the fresh fruits decreased with the advancement of tree age and found lowest (3.09) in the 20 years old plants. Respiration rate did not show any definite pattern in relation to plant age and canopy position. Upper canopy fruits showed higher specific gravity (early maturity) in all age group trees. Fifteen years old trees produced Cu (1.43 ppm) and Mn (0.55 ppm) rich fruits, while 20-year-old trees yielded Mg (17.37 ppm) and Zn (0.57 ppm) rich fruits. Fe content was highest in the fruits obtained from 10-year-old trees.
