Abstract:
The performance of eight years old guava (Psidium guajava L.) selections comprising red and white flesh types developed at ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Barapani, Meghalaya were assessed in comparison with Sadar guava and Allahabad Safeda during the rainy season of 2002 and 2003. The highest productivity was recorded by Allahabad Safeda (20.40 kg/tree) followed by Sardar guava (19.25 kg/tree) and the red flesh type, Selection-1 (18.80 kg/tree). The fruit weight was maximal in Selection-11 (144.20 g) outscoring Sardar guava (140.50 g). Seedyness was least pronounced in case of Selection-11 (3.5/ cut surface). Selection-11 (210.40 mg/100g) and Selection-7 (192.50 mg/100g) showed increased content of ascorbic acid.
Total soluble solids was maximum in Selection-11 (11.0%) followed by Selection-7 (10.6%). The untapped potential of Selection-11 and Selection-7 for quality and yield traits can be better exploited by the tribal farming community of the north eastern region of India.
