Abstract:
For more than 30 years breeding of Prunus domestica plums has been performed at Geisenheim.
The large number of progenies from conventional combination breeding programmes has given valuable information about the inheritance patterns of several important parameters.
Knowing details of practical inheritance patterns is important to aid future progress in producing improved cultivars, as the use of genetic engineering strategies has not gained public acceptance in Europe.
Genotypes for the breeding parameters of maturity time (early, mid and late season), market quality and flavour, disease resistance (especially plum pox resistance), shelf life and storability as well as climatic tolerance (robustness) of blue plums are presented and are characterised in terms of their breeding usefulness.
Regarding the maturity time, donors in the same or a neighbouring ripening group show good results.
For the parameters of robustness, sharka resistance and, to a more limited extent, market quality ‘Čačanská najbolja’ seems to be a unique donor.
New cultivars named and released from this programme are listed.
