ISHS Acta Horticulturae 734: VIII International Symposium on Plum and Prune Genetics, Breeding and Pomology

THE FRUIT QUALITY OF PLUMS (PRUNUS DOMESTICA L.) AS RELATED TO YIELD AND CLIMATIC CONDITIONS

Authors:   E. Vangdal, A. Døving, F. Måge
Keywords:   temperature, precipitation, soluble solids, titratable acidity
Abstract:
The correlations between yield and climatic factors and plum fruit quality were studied in 11 plum cultivars. Based on registrations in the years from 1985 to 2003, a negative correlation was found between yield and soluble solids content in 8 out of 11 studied cultivars. The titratable acidity contents were not influenced by yield. Up to 44 per cent of the variation in soluble solids content was related to the variations in yield. Including climatic factors in the regression equations, 60 to 94 per cent of the variation in soluble solids content was explained by variations in yield, monthly mean temperature and precipitation. The soluble solids content was positively influenced by high temperatures in April and June and cool and wet weather in May. In years with high precipitation in August, the titratable acidity of the plums was high.
