EVALUATION OF PPV SYMPTOMS ON PLUM FRUITS

Abstract:
In autumn 1990, a spatially isolated experimental planting of large assortment of plums (207 cultivars) was established. Two 1-year-old trees of each cultivar on Prunus cerasifera rootstocks were used. In August 1991, the cultivars were inoculated with severe strain of PPV from an infected ‘Domestic Prune’ tree. Cultivars, which were not positive in ELISA tests in 1995, were reinfected by the same PPV source in 1996. The highest transmission occurred in the first year after infection (69.5%). The PPV infection was not transferred on cultivars ´Bila trnecka´, ´Francia Naranes´, ´Large Sugar Prune´, ´Reine Claude Diaphane´, ´Renkloda Jandacek´, ´Scoldus´, ´Tarnina × Kirke´. In years 1998-2003, PPV symptoms were evaluated on fruits. The first evaluation of incidence of sharka was elaborated for years 1998 and 1999 and the second for years 2000-2003. The results show that numbers of trees with PPV symptoms on fruits are continuously growing over time. The strongest symptoms of PPV on fruits were noted in the following cultivars: ´Italian prune´, ´Požegača´, ´Hauszwetsche´ and its clones, ´Albatros´, ´Bonne de Bry´, ´Bucurie´, ´Lützelsachser´, ´Zimmers Frühzwetsche´ etc. On the contrary, ´Čačanská Lepotica´, ´Čačanská Najbolja´, ´Elena´, ´Gabrovska´, ´Green Gage´, ´Hamanova´, ´Hanita´, ´Chrudimer´, ´Large Sugar Prune´, ´Opal´, ´Oullins Gage´, ´Ruth Gerstetter´, ´Stanley ´, ´Tuleu Timpuriu´ etc., did not develop any symptoms.
