ISHS Acta Horticulturae 734: VIII International Symposium on Plum and Prune Genetics, Breeding and Pomology

GROWTH OF PLUM FRUITLETS IN RELATION TO TIME AND CLIMATIC CONDITIONS

Authors:   F. Måge, K. Grønnerød
Keywords:   time of flowering, fruit size, ripening time, temperature
Abstract:
Fruitlets of four plum cultivars were sampled in July and August in 14 years, and the correlation coefficient between fruitlet weight and other parameters was calculated. If a fruitlet is large on July 1, it will also be large on August 15. The relationship between fruit weight on August 15 and fruit weight at harvest was lower. In years with early blossoming, the fruitlets were larger during summer than in years with late blossoming. Time of flowering mostly depend on the temperature in March, April and May. Time of fruit ripening was early in years with high temperatures in May and June. The data indicate that both fruit size in the middle part of August and time of ripening might be predicted at an early stage, about two months before harvest.
