ISHS Acta Horticulturae 734: VIII International Symposium on Plum and Prune Genetics, Breeding and Pomology

NEW RESULTS FROM PLUM BREEDING IN HOHENHEIM

Author:   W. Hartmann
Keywords:   plum breeding, Prunus domestica, fruit quality, sharka, hypersensitivity
Abstract:
The breeding activity in Hohenheim is concentrated on three points of main efforts, firstly the extension of ripening time, secondly a high fruit quality, and thirdly the sharka resistance breeding. The last point is the most important one. With the utilization of the hypersensitivity, found in the gene pool in Hohenheim, the first absolute PPV-resistant cultivar 'Jojo' was released and further used as donor in an extensive resistance breeding programme. Many seedlings were obtained and there is a hope that in some years absolute PPV-resistant cultivars with good fruit quality over the whole season will be found. Promising seedlings of the different breeding aims are presented.
