VARIABILITY OF RESISTANCE TO PLUM POX VIRUS IN INDIVIDUAL NATURALLY GROWING TREES OF MYROBALAN

Abstract:
Recently, myrobalan was proved to be the second main natural source of PPV infection in the Czech Republic. On the other hand, many myrobalan trees are rather resistant to the PPV. Trees of myrobalan infected with PPV were evaluated for the resistance to Plum pox virus. The intensity of PPV symptoms in leaves and fruits was inspected and relative concentration of PPV protein in leaves and flowers was determined by ELISA. Leaves of most PPV infected myrobalans carry only very mild mosaic in leaves and mild diffuse spots in fruits; some trees show no symptoms. Occasionally, medium severe or severe symptoms were observed in leaves and fruits. The relative concentration of PPV protein in flowers and leaves of individual trees is fluctuating, but the values are most often low (102 to 103). Myrobalans seem to be more resistant to PPV compared with plums or blackthorns.
