ISHS Acta Horticulturae 733: III International Grapevine Phylloxera Symposium

ROOTSTOCK-PHYLLOXERA INTERACTIONS UNDER AUSTRALIAN FIELD CONDITIONS

Authors:   C.J. Trethowan, K.S. Powell
Keywords:   Vitis vinifera, grape phylloxera, population dynamics, phylloxera-infested zones
Abstract:
The Australian viticulture industry remains relatively distinct in that over 80% of commercial plantings are on ungrafted susceptible Vitis vinifera, highlighting the industry vulnerability to the potential spread of phylloxera. This study demonstrates the population dynamics, risk of transfer and impact on vine performance of a single phylloxera genetic strain, G1, on eight Vitis types under field conditions over two successive growing seasons. G1 was highly virulent on V. vinifera and the rootstock ARG-1 and had a significant impact on yield and vigour of both. Grape quality indicators were also significantly affected, but only on V. vinifera. Even though under laboratory conditions the G1 strain can develop on some rootstocks, there was no evidence of the same interactions in the field. For this reason, field studies remain an important procedure to validate data collected under controlled conditions and to assist growers with rootstock choices for specific regions or in the event of outbreaks of specific phylloxera genotypes.
