ISHS Acta Horticulturae 732: VIII International Symposium on Canopy, Rootstocks and Environmental Physiology in Orchard Systems

FIFTEEN YEARS OF EXPERIENCE WITH DIFFERENT DWARFING APPLE ROOTSTOCKS IN NORTHERN GERMANY

Author:   R. Stehr
Keywords:   apple rootstocks, growth vigour, fruit size, fruit colour, yield efficiency, Northern Germany
Abstract:
In screening experiments carried out with the cultivars ‘Gloster’ and ‘Jonagold’ and in the first years also with the cultivar ‘Cox’s Orange Pippin’, the rootstocks Ahrensburg 4637, Ahrensburg C 0311, Pi-Au 56-83, Supporter 4 (Pi 80), Bemali, P14, Ottawa 3, Mac 39 and Supporter 3 produced much more vigorous scion growth than similar trees on M.9. Rootstocks Mark, Supporter 2, Pi-Au 9-24, J-TE-H, Supporter 1 and CG 10 were more similar to M.9 but still produced significantly stronger scion growth than the latter. J-TE-E, Bud.9, J9, P2 and P60 were very similar in their growing habit to M.9 and showed no significant improvement to M.9. The group of P59, P11, M.20, P22, J TE-G, P9 and Bud.146 ranges from slightly weaker to slightly more vigorous than M.27 , but altogether very close to M.27. In the desired growing range between M.27 and M.9 rootstocks, Bud. 491, J-TE-F, P16 and J-OH-A are identified as being interesting and new plots with these rootstocks have been established with more trees and different planting distances to get more detailed information about their characteristics and efficiency. In an attempt to summarize all mentioned apple rootstocks in this brief overview, a table has been compiled showing the range of vigour of the rootstocks in relation to M.9.
