ISHS Acta Horticulturae 732: VIII International Symposium on Canopy, Rootstocks and Environmental Physiology in Orchard Systems

INFLUENCE OF ROOTSTOCKS ON VEGETATIVE AND REPRODUCTIVE CHARACTERISTICS OF 'SUNCREST' AND 'REDCAL' PEACH IN AUSTRIA

Authors:   A. Spornberger, K. Pieber
Keywords:   peach, rootstock, peach almond hybrid, plum, training system, spindle, tatura v-trellis
Abstract:
Six rootstocks (Cadaman, Ferlenain Plumina, GF 677, Jaspi Fereley, Kando and Montclar) were tested in the orchard of the Institute of Horticulture, Fruit Growing and Viticulture in Vienna with the peach (Prunus persica) cultivars ‘Redcal’ and ‘Suncrest for their suitability to commercial production. The trees were planted in 1996 and during the period of eight years the following characteristics were evaluated: growth, yield, average fruit weight, root suckers and tree losses. The peach seedling Montclar showed the lowest tree losses of all tested rootstocks, and in growth and yield characteristics, there were few differences among the tested peach almond hybrids (Cadaman, GF 677 and Kando). Tested plum rootstocks (Ferlenain Plumina, Jaspi Fereley) were not satisfying. Trees trained as spindles showed higher tree losses than on tatura v-trellis.
