'RIVAL' - A NEW ROOTSTOCK FOR PLUM

Authors:   I. Botu, S. Preda, E. Turcu, G. Achim, M. Botu

Abstract:
The plum crop has a long growing tradition in Romania. This fruit crop requires productive and good quality cultivars and valuable rootstocks. Modern plum culture cannot be done without adequate rootstocks. S.C.D.P. Valcea initiated a plum rootstock breeding program, which produced several clonal rootstocks: ’Otesani 11’ (1987), ’Miroval’ (1998) and ’Rival’ (2003). Other valuable elite stocks are in different stages of evaluation. ’Rival’ is a clonal plum rootstock which has medium vigour, good compatibility with various plum cultivars, good tolerance to major diseases and pests, and is thornless. Stem cutting propagation is good (over 79% rooted cuttings). This rootstock has a high cutting yield obtained in the mother orchard (149,000 pcs./ha). ’Rival’ can be used for intensive plum culture.
