Abstract:
The breeding and selection of new rootstocks for apples continues at East Malling Research (formerly Horticultural Research International – East Malling). Results of screening trials conducted over the last 15 years, some of which are still in progress, have identified several promising new rootstock clones.
Clones AR. 672-1 induced vigour similar to that produced by M.27, but with slightly better fruit size and yield efficiency.
Vigour intermediate between that achieved by M.27 and M.9 was induced by AR.486-1, AR.295-6, AR.669-1 and R.59. One new rootstock with vigour very similar to M.9, AR.680-2, showed excellent yield efficiency and induction of large fruit size.
Finally, two selections, AR.801-11 and AR.835-11, produced trees with vigour similar to that on M.26 and good yield performance.
The cumulative yields, fruit grade outs and yield efficiencies of trees on the various rootstocks are discussed.
