SEED GERMINATION OF SCOLYMUS MACULATUS L. AT DIFFERENT TEMPERATURES AND UNDER DIFFERENT LIGHT CONDITIONS |

| Abstract:
Recently, an increasing interest has developed in wild species for their possible benefit to human health. Scolymus maculatus L. is a wild species belonging to the Asteraceae family, which grows in southern Italy. The edible portion is the midrib. No evidence is available regarding environmental factors on seed germination of S. maculatus. The influence of two light conditions (dark or 8 h of light) and eight temperatures (10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 15/5, 20/10 and 25/15°C) were tested. Temperature did not influence seed germination (average 28%), but when temperature was 20°C constant the span of germination, T25, T50 and T75 were shorter and germination values higher. The light positively affected the germination percentage (31 vs. 24%), T50 and germination value. Interesting temperature × light interaction effects are described. | |
