REUSE OF TREATED MUNICIPAL WASTE WATERS IN ARTICHOKE CROP

Abstract:
The aim of this work was the optimization of the use of treated waste water for the agricultural minimizing of the processes of environmental pollution that could take place. The experiment was undertaken at the Campo de Cartagena (Murcia-Spain, 37°40’N - 0°58’W), an area of long standing artichoke cultivation. The experiment was carried out in an artichoke field [Cynara cardunculus L. var. scolymus L. (Fiori)] cv. Blanca de Tudela grown on drainage lysimeters irrigated with waste water coming from Torre Pacheco sewage treatment plant. The soil was a clay loam with a pH of 7.2, 1.8% organic matter, 3.8 dS m-1 CE (25ºC saturation extract) and 13 meq 100 g-1 CEC. The established treatments were differentiated in the irrigation dose, 50, 75, 100 and 125% of the total irrigation requirements of crop. The fertilization doses were 400, 60, 630, 140 and 50 kg ha-1 of N, P, K, Ca and Mg respectively, and equal for all the treatments. The volume of drained water was measured daily and the irrigation water, leached and soil were analyzed periodically. The irrigation water presented CE values between 2.8 and 4.3 dS m-1, high content in Cl- and Na+ and occasionally PO43- and NO3-. The total volume of water supplied was 723 mm in the 100% treatment with a drainage obtained of 11.21%. The treatments irrigated with 100 and 125% of the total irrigation requirements drained during the whole period of cultivation. The highest yield obtained was 3.03 kg m-2 in 100% treatment being significantly greater than those obtained in the 50 and 75% treatments of the total irrigation requirements.
