AGRONOMIC EVALUATION OF ARTICHOKE VARIETIES OF DIFFERENT EUROPEAN ORIGINS |

| Abstract:
The ‘Blanca de Tudela’ (Tudela White) variety of artichoke in particular constitutes the most traditional and best established horticultural crop in the irrigated fields of Navarre, due not so much to the production of heads for the fresh market or for the canning or frozen industry, but to the production of stubs to supply the large artichoke-producing areas of Spain. This piece of research studies the agronomic behaviour of 38 varieties of artichoke of different origins. When considering the established groups of varieties according to their origin, the root-taking of the ‘Blanca de Tudela’ group was found on average to be the highest. Furthermore, the varieties of this group were the most productive, with yields exceeding 2.40 kg per plant and an average production of 21.8 heads per plant, followed by the Violet de Provenze group. In comparison with the other varieties the ones originating from the ‘Blanca de Tudela’ were also found to be clearly earlier, in other words, they tended to come into production earlier. Varieties originating from the ‘Blanca de Tudela’ selection turned out to be the most interesting because of their earliness and higher yields. On the other hand, most of the varieties originating from the Camus of Bretagne were found to be later maturing and less productive. | |
