Abstract:
Experimental seedlings of Catharanthus roseus showed that maximum root and ajmalicine yield are obtained after approximately 7 months of growth from seeding at density of approximately 400 000 plants per ha in spaced rows.
Dry soil moisture regime significantly decreased total root and ajmalicine yields, but increased ajmalicine content of the roots compared with wet soil moisture conditions.
Phosphorus and nitrogen were found to be essential minerals for the support of intensive root and shoot growth.
Ajmalicine is mainly concentrated in the roots 0–5 cm below the soil surface and in the 0–5 cm stubble.
The crop showed some tolerance to watering with saline water.
