| Abstract:
In a once-over harvest of sweet paprika fruits picked after a period of on-the-plant drying, it is possible to obtain high yields of excellent quality raw material, both for paprika spice production and for pigment extraction. Postponing the harvest time after the cessation of irrigation increases the dry matter content and colour intensity without any loss of the dry matter yield. Cultivar Shany was found to be more adaptable for mechanical harvesting than cv. Mild California due to its low rate of vegetative development. The yields of Shany are slightly higher, but its colour values are somewhat inferior to those of Mild California. By transplanting plants grown under plastic cover during early spring, the length of the growing period could be reduced by 3 weeks, thus decreasing water requirements and enabling the cultivation of another crop sown in the autumn. The application of once-over harvesting would simplify the problem of mechanical harvesting, a prerequisite for any considerable expansion of sweet paprika cultivation in Israel. | |
