Abstract:
Czechoslovakia has a long and good tradition in collecting and cultivating medicinal plants.
This fact is due to the climatic and soil conditions, and to the wealth of flora.
Especially after World War II began intentional cultivation of medicinal plants preceded, naturally, by tendencious breeding work.
The result of this work is the large assortment of medicinal plants in maintenance breeding, and propagation for phytotherapy.
Contemporarily we have 28 species and 33 cultivars of medicinal plants in maintenance breeding.
In breeding a new variety, originally mass selection was used, later followed by repeated individual selection.
Further step of our work was composite cross breeding.
Our plants breeders also successfully applied mutation breeding.
In the future the breeding programme dealing with medicinal plants intends to gain
- productive cultivars
- high content of desired components in the species and
- suitability of the large-scale production
