EFFECTS OF MICRO-IRRIGATION SYSTEMS ON LETTUCE AND RADISH PRODUCTION

Abstract:
The main objective of this study was to evaluate the potential for producing high-value iceberg lettuce and radish crops grown in loose sandy soils, irrigated with micro-sprinkler and surface drip systems. The field experiments were carried out in 1999-2000 at Kruszyn Krajeński near Bydgoszcz on a sandy soil (Typic Hapludolls). During the investigation the four field experiments were conducted in a randomized blocks method of a two-factorial ‘split-plot’ system for radish and as one-factorial system for iceberg lettuce with three replications. The first factor was irrigation used in three variants (O – non-irrigated plots (control), D – drip-irrigated plots, M – micro-sprinkler-irrigated plots); the second factor were three cultivars of radish. Iceberg lettuce was cultivated before radish. Both vegetables were cultivated in the same vegetation season from April to September (iceberg lettuce May-July and radish August-September), during the two experimental years (1999-2000). Irrigation significantly increased marketable yields of lettuce and radish cultivated in loose sandy soil. Water use efficiency was higher in case of drip irrigation in comparison to micro-sprinkler irrigation. The results obtained show the usefulness of drip irrigation in vegetable growing which considerably decreased water consumption and maintained proper moisture conditions for lettuce and radish growth and yielding.
