THE PRODUCTIVITY OF EARLY POTATO CULTIVARS UNDER AGRO-ECOLOGICAL CONDITIONS OF SOUTH PART OF BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA |

| Abstract:
This study was conducted to determine yield and some quality criteria of six early potato cultivars: Arielle, Almera, Riviera, Virgo, Vitesse and Ostara, all from Holland, in the two growing seasons (2002 and 2003). These experiments have been carried out under agro ecological conditions of the Municipality of Stolac, at an altitude of 65 m. The climate is Mediteranean, with hot summer and mild winter. The soil is aluvial-carbonate on “sedra”. The results of soil test: pH 7.0-8.1, with low content of phosphorus and middle content of potassium. Irrigation was applied only during the second year of the experiment. First date of harvest was 50 days after planting and the second one was 65 days after planting. The cultivars Arielle and Riviera had the highest yields, in both years of investigation. Crops in the second year were bigger by 85% when compared with the first year, which is a result of irrigation during the second year. With regard to the terms of harvest, crops were bigger by 56% than in the first yield. The content of dry matter varied from 20.5% to 22.2%, and of starch from 15.4% to 17%. The highest contents of dry matter and starch were found in the Arielle cultivar. Mass of tuber ranged from 36 g to 149 g, depending on the cultivar and the year. The heaviest tuber was found in the cultivar Arielle (149 g) at the second date of harvest, and in the cultivar Riviera in the first date of harvest. The cultivar Vitessa proved to have the largest number of tubers per plant in both harvest. In both years, all the examined cultivars had better yield than the cultivar Ostara, which was used as the control cultivar. | |
