Authors:   L. Krasteva, G. Neshev, M. Vassileva
Keywords:   germplasm, eggplant, trait collection, breeding programmes
Abstract:
A national eggplant (S. melongena L.) collection was created at the Institute for Plant Genetic Resources (IPGR) in Sadovo, Bulgaria. A complete system for managing the S. melongena L. Gene Bank was developed, involving planning, collecting, introducing, reproducing, documenting, analyzing, classifying and conserving the genetic resources. A complex scientific approach for managing, testing and using the genetic resources of specific plant species within the national germplasm was developed. In the process of long-term scientific and research work, breeding programmes were realized, in result of which 2 new eggplant cultivars “Luch” and “Antim”, carrying a complex of valuable properties and becoming later national standards, were developed.
