Abstract:
Due to its adaptation to semi-arid environments and high energy value for dairy cows, forage cactus pear has become the most important forage plant for milk production in the state of Pernambuco. The objective of this work was to evaluate the production of forage cactus pear varieties and identify more productive varieties when compared to the traditional varieties ‘Gigante’, ‘Redonda’ (O. ficus-indica Mill) and ‘Miuda’ (Nopalea cochenillifera Salm Dick). This study included varieties from other countries and from the Agriculture and Livestock Research Institute of Pernambuco. The varieties were grown in a randomized block design on three locations. Twenty treatments with three replications of 20 t/ha of cow manure were applied at planting. The plants were harvested two years after planting. Dry matter yield of clone IPA-20 was superior to all other varieties (28.60 t ha-1). This clone also presented an acceptable crude protein content of 7.83%.
