Abstract:
Yields of sweet cherries (Prunus avium L.) are very variable from season to season and frequently very poor in UK environmental conditions.
Experiments are described in which sprays of gibberellic acid (GA3) or aminoethoxyvinylglycine (AVG) were applied, post blossoming, to trees of the cultivars ‘Stella’ and ‘Colney’ in attempts to improve their yield consistency and fruit quality.
Multiple low dose sprays of GA3 increased the yields of ‘Colney’ but had no similar effect on ‘Stella’. Both the GA3 and the AVG sprays delayed cherry harvest but only the former increased fruit firmness.
The AVG sprays often reduced harvested fruit size.
