Abstract:
Fruit growth of Actinidia deliciosa ‘Hayward’ and a gold-fleshed selection of Actinidia chinensis was stimulated by CPPU (N-(2-chloro-4-pyridyl)N`-phenylurea, but the natural plant extract Benefit® only significantly increased growth of A. chinensis fruit.
The biostimulant Organozyma® was ineffective in promoting fruit growth of either species.
A large fruit size response to cane girdling was found in both species but in A. chinensis the effect of a cane girdle was increased by Benefit® but decreased by CPPU. The latter also decreased the effect of a girdle in A. deliciosa. Unlike CPPU, which is ineffective if applied only to the leaves rather than the fruit, Benefit® is very effective when applied only to the leaves.
The possibility that these results indicate different modes of action for CPPU compared to Benefit® are discussed as is the likelihood that factors limiting fruit growth are different between the two species.
