Abstract:
This research was carried out to improve new almond rootstocks with suitable characteristics and adaptability to Iranian soil and climatical conditions.
Five interspecific crosses were made between peach (Prunus persica), almond (P. amygdalus), apricot (P. armeniaca), plum (P. domestica) and prune (P. cerasifera), during 1998-99, at Sahand Horticultural Research Station in Tabriz.
The most successful crosses were almond × peach and apricot × plum, while in other combinations the percent of fruit set and formation of complete seeds was very low.
Preliminary evaluation of 46 resulted interspecific offsprings (IO) during 2000-2004, showed that HS314 and HS312 (almond × peach) had easy propagation, high tree vigour, relative resistance to diseases, good anchorage, low sucker production and well adapted to the environmental stresses.
Among 46 IO, HS304 had good fruit quality, HS409 produced sterile flowers and HS416 was dwarf.
The genotypes HS304, HS411 (apricot × plum) and HS416 (apricot × prune) in spite of having suitable characteristics had low rooting ability by cutting.
By two years evaluation of selected rootstocks, they showed good graft compatibility with almond, apricot, plum and peach cultivars.
