Abstract:
A research project was conducted in the Research Institute of Forest and Rangeland (R.I.F.R.) in Iran to study genetics and breeding in some important characteristics of Pistacia atlantica. As a first step or initially, selection of female and male trees in the provinces of Tehran, Fars, Khorasan, Ilam, Systan and Blochestan, Eastern Azerbaijan, Yazd and Markazi was done. Full and half sib progenies were produced using artificial pollination. Crosses between selected parental parents in Fars (94), Eastern Azerbaijan (73), Tehran (90), and Markazi (76) were performed. At the harvesting season, full-sibs and half-sib seeds were collected from crossed and selected mother trees. Full-sib and half-sib seeds were planted in fields to germinate and grow. Different data have been collected but are not all shown in this paper. In the laboratory, oil percentage of some seed groups was determined. The range of oil production in different female trees was between 20-39 %. The role of male parents in high oil production in directed crosses was significant. It means that, regarding the vast area of natural forests of P. atlantica in Iran, and the cross-pollinating system in P. atlantica, there is a very good opportunity for oil production in these forests. Selection of suitable female trees for oil and seedling production would be possible. Meanwhile, regarding fruit and oil production of different artificially or naturally pollinated trees, provinces sorting could be possible and useful.
