A BRIEF OUTLOOK ON IRAN HORTICULTURE

Abstract:
Iran, with a total area of 1,648,195 square kilometers, lies between 25 to 40 north latitude and between 44 and 63 east longitude. It is located in the northern hemisphere and in west Asia and its population is about 69 million. This country is surrounded by three mountain ranges in the north, central and western regions and there are Caspian Sea in the northern part and Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman in its southern parts. With respects to its special geographical position, this country has temperate, subtropical and tropical climate conditions. Thus, with regards to such special potentialities and possibilities and its soil conditions as well, a big variety of horticultural plants grow in this country. The importance of its agricultural sector is such that this sector makes about 20% of its GNP and about 23% of its active manpower. In Iran, a considerable amount of skilled and specialized manpower are trained and educated in its horticultural sector. Furthermore, a great number of university staff, researchers, experts, university students and professionals are active in Iranian Society for Horticultural Sciences. Today, with respect to application of advanced technology in agriculture sector, there has been considerable development in its horticultural sector as well, resulting in the extensive increase of its products. The total volume of its agricultural products reached over 75 million tons in the last agricultural year, of which over 25 million tons were horticultural products and about 14 million tons of temperate, sub-tropical and tropical and dry fruits were produced. Throughout history, Iran has been considered as a fruit basket area in the region, because of its massive fruit production, e.g. it is worthy to mention that situation provided this country as the largest producer and exporter of pistachio in the world. In this study, it is tried to provide the necessary information on different fruits, growing in Iran. But with respect to the nature of the work of the “4th International Symposium of Pistachio and Almond”, there have been comprehensive information and considerable emphasize on these two products, and detailed information are given on different aspects, i.e. varieties, rootstocks, etc…
