USING SSR MARKERS TO DISTINGUISH APPLE CULTIVARS

Authors:   Z. Galli, G. Halasz, E. Kiss, J. Dobranszki, L. Heszky
Keywords:   microsatellite markers, distinguish, apple cultivars
Abstract:
The accessibility of reliable genetic markers is essential for variety identification and/or the development of efficient breeding methods to create new apple cultivars selected for disease resistance, fruit quality or tree growth characteristics etc. The emergence of PCR-based molecular markers such as RAPDs, SSRs, AFLPs has created the opportunity for fine-scale genetic characterizations of germplasm collections, as well. In this study a collection of 46 different commercial apple cultivars from the Research and Extension Centre for Fruit Growing, Újfehértó (HU) were screened with 6 SSR (Simple Sequence Repeat) primer-pairs. As few as four arbitrarily chosen microsatellite markers from the applied six were sufficient to unambiguously differentiate all the studied apple cultivars. Involvement of further primer pairs is necessary just in case of closely related group of cultivars.
