ACCUMULATION OF NUTRIENTS AND GROWTH OF PROCESSING TOMATO

Abstract:
To characterise nutrient accumulation and tomato growth, an experiment was conducted on a farm owned by Unilever Best Foods Brazil, in the production area of Patos de Minas (46°51’W; 18°57’S, 1100 m altitude and with a 22.3°C mean annual temperature). The hybrid variety ‘Heinz 9992’ with potential production of 130-140 t ha-1 was used in a fully randomised experimental design with double rows. The soil chemical characteristics in the 0-20 cm layer were: 155 mg dm-3 of P; 32 g dm-3 of Organic Matter; pH in CaCl2 of 5.7 and 4.2, 42, 10, 17, and 56.8 mmolc dm-3 of K, Ca, Mg, H+Al, and S, respectively. The crop was fertilised with 1666 kg ha-1 of 4-30-16 (N-P-K) with 0.2% of Zn, 0.04% of B and 0.4% of Mn at planting. During crop growth the following fertiliser was applied through the drip irrigation system; 81.5 kg ha-1 of N, 50.2 kg ha-1 of P2O5 and 121.8 kg ha-1 of K2O. Sub surface drip irrigation was established using Netafim® ribbon at a depth of 20 cm. The row length was 120 m with an emitter rate of 1.7 L h-1 and a spacing of 0.4 m between emitters. A total of 21 plant harvests were collected at 7 day intervals starting 17 days after sowing. The average productivity was 129 t ha-1 with 92.3% mature fruit. The dry weight of fruit increased until harvest, with the final production of 330.68 g per plant. Total nutrient accumulation measurements in fruit (kg ha-1) were as follows; 441.33 of N, 47.24 of P, 615.23 of K, 308.54 of Ca, 117.68 of Mg, 45.02 of S, 1.23 of B, 0.66 of Cu, 8.32 of Fe, 2.80 of Mn and 1.64 of Zn.
