Abstract:
MELCOPTOR (MEditerranean Link COmmittee on Processing TOmato Research) is a research network that was set up during the 5th World Congress/8th ISHS Symposium on Processing Tomato in Istanbul (June 2002), and funded by the European Commission.
Presently, it is considered as an international association of individual researchers, involved in processing tomato thematic.
It currently has 70 members, indirectly representing 34 research teams or institutes in 14 countries.
The general objectives are to create a permanent link between the researchers working on specific programs involved in all processing tomato chain levels in the Mediterranean region and in Central and Eastern Europe, to allow researchers to meet, to confront their programs and exchange scientific information, to establish research cooperation and coordinate joint or complementary research topics.
The network is structured around six scientific/thematic groups to serve common research objectives in order to increase knowledge and improve processing tomato crop management.
The first output from the network was the creation of the website www.melcoptor.org . The members of the network are currently working on a book on tomato research in the network area, which they hope to publish in 2005.
