Abstract:
Trials were conducted at two locations over two years to determine tolerance of a number of processing tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) cultivars to postemergence applications of thifensulfuron-methyl at 6 and 12 g a.i. ha-1. Certain cultivars (‘H7404’, ‘H3202’, ‘H8004’, ‘N1069’, ‘N2686SC’, ‘H7204’, ‘AD82’ and ‘H9706’) exhibited leaf cupping and distortion, and chlorosis of new growing tissues for at least 28 days after treatment.
The level of weed control thifensulfuron-methyl provided, when used following a standard pre-plant incorporated herbicide treatment and in various postemergence tank-mix combinations was also determined.
A pre-plant incorporated treatment of s-metolachlor (1600 g a.i. ha-1) plus metribuzin (375 g a.i. ha-1), followed by thifensulfuron-methyl (6 g a.i. ha-1) provided greater than 90% control of triazine-tolerant common lamb’s-quarters (Chenopodium album L.) as well as other weeds present in the trials.
Thifensulfuron-methyl was registered for use on processing tomatoes in Ontario in 2002, and work is ongoing to identify sensitive cultivars.
