Keywords:   Petunia spp., virus hosts, Potato virus Y, coat protein gene
Abstract:
Virus isolates were identified from petunias [Petunia × hybrida ‘Bravo Rose’ (KX) and the vegetatively propagated ‘Surfinia Revolution Purple’ (NYB] collected from two different parts of Hungary. Symptoms, results of serology and electron microscopy, and comparison of a region of 380 bp of the coat protein (CP) gene with known sequences from the databases were evaluated. The analyzed region of the CP gene of the isolate from the ‘Surfinia Revolution Purple’ variety showed 98% homology with a PVYH: PVYNTN isolate (accession number m95491), while the isolate from the ‘Bravo Rose’ variety showed 97% homology with a PVYFR: PVYN isolate (accession number d00441). This is the first report on the natural occurrence of the NTN strain of Potato virus Y (PVYNTN) on petunia in Hungary.
