INCIDENCE OF BEAN YELLOW MOSAIC VIRUS ON IRIS

Abstract:
Dutch Bulbous Iris (Iris × hollandica Hort.) is an important crop of world floriculture trade and is susceptible to a number of viruses giving a number of symptoms like mosaic, leaf curling, mottling and flower deformation. Iris plants growing in Kangra valley (H.P.), India and showing mosaic symptoms were tested for the presence of Bean yellow mosaic virus (BYMV) by different diagnostic techniques like bioassay, enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), immuno electron microscopy (IEM) and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). ELISA and IEM were able to detect BYMV only in leaf samples of the two cultivars tested while RT-PCR detects the virus in all plant parts. Thus, RT-PCR described in this paper are proposed for the reliable diagnosis of BYMV in iris bulb.
