CLONING AND CHARACTERIZATION OF A NEW TOBAMOVIRUS INFECTING HIBISCUS ROSA-SINENSIS

Authors:   K.G. Srinivasan, S.M. Wong
Keywords:   HLSV, RdRp, subgroup II, phylogenetic analysis
Abstract:
A new tobamovirus infecting Hibiscus rosa-sinensis L. in Singapore (HVS) was reported earlier (Archives of Virology 2002, 147: 1585-1598). This new tobamovirus has been renamed as Hibiscus latent Singapore virus (HLSV). The full-length nucleotide sequence of HLSV was determined. The genome consists of a 5’UTR, a RNA dependent RNA polymerase (RdRP) encoding for methyltransferase- helicase, a movement protein (MP), a coat protein (CP) and a unique 3’ UTR. Phylogenetic trees generated based on the nucleotide and amino acid sequences of its ORFs indicate that this new virus belongs to subgroup II of tobamoviruses.
