Abstract:
Experience of direct drilling of cereals has shown that this technique can give significant advantages over traditional cultivation in allowing sowing to be carried out under moister soil conditions.
In the UK vegetable crops are not usually established by direct drilling technique but this technique could lead to 1) the creation of a firm but not compact soil surface allowing access in wet weather, 2) the conservation of top soil moisture, and 3) the exploitation of fluid sowing of pre-germinated seeds.
The changes in machinery design for direct drilling of vegetables which will be necessary are discussed.
