ISHS Acta Horticulturae 72: Symposium on the Timing of Field vegetable Production

THE ESTABLISHMENT OF LETTUCE AT HIGH SOIL TEMPERATURES

Author:   D. Gray
Abstract:
The germination of lettuce seeds was delayed when imbibing seeds were exposed to high temperatures (33°C) at both the start of imbibition and at the start of mitosis in the radicle axis. Seeds were less sensitive to high temperature when exposed when the main period of water uptake was complete. The subsequent development of seeds exposed to 33°C when the radicles were just emerging was not significantly affected. An exposure to 33°C of 24 h at the start of imbibition and the start of cell division delayed the time to 50% germination by 6.5 and 4.0 days, respectively. Prolonged exposure to 33°C at the former but not the latter stage reduced emergence.
