Abstract:
Work carried out in 1975 and 1976 on continuity of production in lettuce is summarised and comparisons made between direct drilled and transplanted programmes.
In general, continuity and yields from drilled crops were unsatisfactory due to poor emergence and establishment.
Transplanted crops were much more uniform in maturity and matured more predictably.
In spite of the higher costs involved with transplanting, this system is to be preferred unless the difficulties encountered in the emergence and establishment of drilled crops can be overcome.
