| Abstract:
Seedling emergence is the conclusion to a complex interaction that occurs between the seed and the soil, and is influenced by properties of the seed, the seed drill and the soil environment at and after sowing. Three aspects of the interaction are considered: the expression of seed vigour in relation to stress conditions; the effect of temperature on rate of emergence; and the effect of a restricted moisture supply on the level of emergence. If predictable emergence is to be achieved it is essential to understand precisely how different stresses affect seeds and seedlings. | |
