A TRADE FLOWS ANALYSIS OF FRESH APRICOTS: THE EUROPEAN MARKETS

Authors:   A. Bertazzoli, S. Rivaroli
Keywords:   apricot, trade, apparent consumption, normalised balance
Abstract:
Italy is one of the leading apricot-tree growers on a world level and in the European context. It is also the biggest consumer of apricots among EU member countries, with a considerable share of the product going to fresh consumption and processing (fruit juices, preserves and jams). Although Italy stands out for its commercial attitude as a “net importer” country, significant quantities go to the German and Austrian markets during the middle period of the marketing campaign, when there is a production surplus. The Italian product must, however, compete with lots of goods coming from Spain and France, which stand out for high quality standards and highly-competitive prices. An analysis of this product’s trade flow characteristics will help define the competitive arena and enable prudent commercial and productive choices.
