Abstract:
For studying genetic diversity of fourteen apricot cultivars from Europe and North America, and thirteen breeding lines from the apricot breeding programme of CEBAS-CSIC (Murcia, Spain), ten peach simple sequence repeat (SSR) sequences were assayed. Also, several agronomic traits were evaluated including flowering and maturity time, self-compatibility, skin and flesh colour and fruit size. The results allowed the molecular identification of all the apricot genotypes assayed. The correlation between the clustering based on SSR and the agronomic data was very low. Cluster analysis based on SSR data clearly differentiated the genotypes according to their origin and pedigree, whereas cluster analysis based on agronomic data differentiated some genotypes according to their pomological characterisation. Our results show the great genetic diversity of the apricot cultivars studied and the potential of this diversity for apricot breeding programmes.
