GENE POOL UTILISATION IN APRICOT BREEDING IN SLOVAK REPUBLIC

Author:   D. Benedikova
Keywords:   Prunus armeniaca L. apricot, gene pool, breeding
Abstract:
The low geographic plasticity of the apricot species means that a breeding programme is necessary to generate varieties which are adapted to the specific conditions of the Slovakian production area. The apricot breeding programme in Slovakia was initiated in 1964 at the RIPP, Piestany. From the start of the programme until now, 10 cultivars have been registered in the Slovak Republic. The new assortment has late blossoming, better quality of fruits and a prolonged maturation fruit period. The best cultivars are ‘Veselka®’, ‘Velita®’, ‘Vemina®’ and ‘Vestar®’. A new collection of apricot genetic resources was founded as a field collection of the Piestany gene bank.
