ISHS Acta Horticulturae 716: VII International Protea Research Symposium

MICROPROPAGATION OF LEUCOSPERMUM ´HIGH GOLD´ AND THREE CULTIVARS OF PROTEA

Authors:   M. Thillerot, F. Choix, A. Poupet, M. Montarone
Keywords:   apical meristem, axillary budding, benzyladenine, gibberellic acid, rooting, acclimatization
Abstract:
A method for the in vitro initiation and multiplication of explants from Leucospermum and Protea is described. For Leucospermum ‘High Gold’, both rooting and acclimatisation of the plant material was successful although rooting was rated low. For the genus Protea, the multiplication stage has been defined for P. ‘Venus’, P. cynaroides and is in progress for P. ‘Cardinal’. The method is characterised by three main factors:
  • The use of apical tips as initial explants without chemical sterilization
  • Low levels of nitrogen and phosphorus in the culture media
  • Growth patterns of the various cultivars
Further studies are being conducted, particularly for improved rooting of Leucospermum and for multiplication of tissue and rooting of the Protea cultivars.
