A PHYTOMETRIC IRRADIANCE MEASURING INSTRUMENT

Authors:   G.J.C. da Costa, J.L. Cuello
Keywords:   phytometric, radiation, lighting, instrument, sensor
Abstract:
The normalized relative quantum efficiency (RQE) curve, which shows the relative photosynthetic response to radiation of the average photosynthesizing plant, was used as the basis in developing the phytometric system, the new system for plant-based radiation measurement. Based on the multiplication of the RQE curve with the spectral power distribution (SPD) of a given radiation source within the range of photosynthetically useful radiation (320 nm – 780 nm), the resulting phytometric measurement has a basic unit of phytoWatt or Wp. The accuracy, versatility and user-friendliness of the phytometric system endow it with significant potential to become the universal standard for plant-based radiation measurement. The prototype for the phytometric irradiance meter is a multifunctional radiation meter that growers, engineers, architects and scientists would find very useful.
