ISHS Acta Horticulturae 710: International Symposium on Greenhouses, Environmental Controls and In-house Mechanization for Crop Production in the Tropics and Sub-Tropics

EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES IN CONTROLLED ENVIRONMENT PRODUCTION SYSTEMS

Author:   T. Takakura
Keywords:   evaporative cooling, computer image analysis, covering materials
Abstract:
Environmental control in tropical and sub-tropical countries is not simple since cooling is a basic part of environmental control systems. The climate in these regions is classified as hot and dry or hot and humid. Evaporative cooling is an effective and economical method for cooling, but special software is necessary to operate a system with some unique devices in hot and humid areas. Structures and facilities are of two main types: simple plastic houses such as rain shelters without any control system are appropriate in some regions; and complex glasshouses with sophisticated control systems can be justified in some cases. Investment strategies should be based on whether the production is only for domestic consumption or for export. Energy input and skilled and intensive labor requirements are other limiting factors for the operations in these regions, and environmental conservation is also an issue.
