Abstract:
High vegetable production under rain shelter can be established by proper managing of vegetable crop growth and overcoming the problems of weeds in the field in a timely and efficient manner. Crop growth and weeds need to be monitored frequently at different stages of crop establishment, so that necessary action can be taken to avoid outbreak damage over large acreage of vegetable crops. The application of a computer vision system is the best solution to monitor the crops and weeds for early season. The tractor based computer vision system (TCVS) for image processing was developed with the aim to capture high quality image and large data storage of crop growth and weeds in an efficient and convenient manner. The system was developed by acquiring selected components of a laboratory PC based vision or image processing system which, basically, comprises of a CCD camera and a frame grabber. Additional customized camera transporting devices to position the CCD camera and devices for remotely controlled camera lens focusing to obtain variable resolution of image capture were also developed as an integral component of the system. The image processing software was used to differentiate between crops and weeds. The experiments were conducted on the vegetable farm under rain shelter in MARDI, Serdang, Malaysia.
