Abstract:
A study was conducted to look at the effects of different levels of light intensity and durations of acclimatization on the quality of Dracaena reflexa and subsequently during dark storage to simulate shipping conditions. This study was carried out in three stages, acclimatization, simulated shipping conditions and post-shipment recovery. It was conducted at Field 2, Department of Crop Science, University Putra Malaysia, Serdang, Selangor, Malaysia. Foliage plants were adapted under three different light intensities, 122, 284 and 698 µE m-2 s-1 for 2, 4 or 6 weeks. The plants were then respectively placed in an interior environment for about four weeks (simulated shipping). After four weeks in simulated shipping, plants were restored for a week. In this experiment, plants grown under 284 µE m-2 s-1 for 6 weeks acclimatization period maintained a substantial good quality during simulated shipping conditions. These plants also managed to recover after one week of restoration period.
